Like most true cactus species, Opuntia is native to the Americas. It was named for the Ancient Greek city of Opus, and its fruit – the prickly pear – is still enjoyed throughout Greece, Italy and Malta, as well as central America. Prickly pears are a prime source of food for the common giant tortoises in the Galápagos Islands, and the tortoise community thrives on islands where this plant is abundant.
