Alcedo argentatus flumenicola
There are two sub-species of this small, colourful river bird. The Northern Silvery Kingfisher, Alcedo argentatus flumenicola, is smaller than the Southern Silvery Kingfisher, Alcedo argentatus argentatus and has brighter orange-red legs. Both native to the Philippines, their habitat in tropical or sub-tropical lowland forests and rivers is considered to be under threat. The Silvery Kingfisher is known as the kasay-kasay bird in the Philippines, a name derived from the word “kasay” in the Tagalog language, meaning to take a lengthy bath.
